Appendix N

In 1979, Gary Gygax added an appendix to the original Dungeon Master’s Guide listing the works that inspired the game he co-created, Dungeons & Dragons. Featuring authors such as Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, and Jack Vance—who shaped the genre’s weird fiction roots—Appendix N has become a foundational reference for understanding gaming culture’s literary (and other media) influences. People like Jeffro Johnson and Peter Bebergal have studied and expanded upon these legacies. Prismatic Wasteland recently compiled a meta-Appendix N. Today, the term "Appendix N" is used more broadly to contextualize cultural works within their lineages.
